How to Cancel an IKEA Order

Online ordering is a wonderful convenience but returning purchases that didn’t live up to expectations can be a hassle with some retailers. Fortunately, IKEA is a behemoth organization with a return policy that is precise and pleasantly easy to understand.

So how to cancel an Ikea order? To cancel an Ikea order, use your order tracking number on IKEA’s website. IKEA’s website offers a way to cancel or change your order quickly, and there are chat, email and phone staff available to help.

Returning the opened or unopened item is also easily arranged online.

To be sure that the process goes smoothly and you feel confident when ordering online with IKEA, let’s look at the nitty-gritty of online cancelation and returns with the world’s favorite furniture store.

How to Cancel an IKEA Order

IKEA’s return policy is set up like the rest of IKEA’s business model — logical processes that follow a simple decision-making tree. Let’s start at the beginning:

  • How did you order?

Online:  orders can be canceled online or in-store

In-store:  purchases can be returned at any IKEA store or arranged through the website

  • How soon did you realize you wanted to return an item?

Immediately:  IKEA’s website offers a way to cancel or change your order quickly, and there are chat, email and phone staff available to help

After delivery:  Keep the packaging from your delivery; if you assembled the furniture, you don’t need to disassemble and flat-pack to return it

  • Do you have your Order Number?

Yes:  This number is sufficient proof of payment during the return process

No:  IKEA will accept other forms of payment proof, including digital receipts or gift card transaction record

  • How do you want to return the item?

Return shipping (third party):  You will be responsible for all shipping costs (both delivery and return costs)

Pick-up:  IKEA can arrange a pick-up service for return items (you will be responsible for these charges and the original delivery fees as well)

In-Store:  IKEA stores have a designated return area

It’s important to remember that IKEA will only accept returns for items that are complete, undamaged, unused and in resellable condition. Unless the damage occurred during the manufacturing or delivery processes, IKEA will not accept a damaged item for return.

IKEA returns can be made within 365 days of purchase. Items returned without the original packaging receive a store credit refund.

What Should I Do if the Delivery Arrives Anyway?

IKEA’s online orders leave their warehouse approximately two days prior to the delivery date. If you were unable to cancel the order and the items arrive, simply refuse the delivery. The items will then be returned to the warehouse, and your refund will be credited to you within two weeks of the warehouse re-entry date.

What About Return Logistics?

You do have a couple of options for how to return your IKEA item but return delivery via the method it arrived is likely the easiest (though not necessarily the cheapest) option.

If you weren’t able to refuse delivery, you can either arrange with the third-party shipping company directly or contact IKEA to arrange for pick-up. These options will be at your expense.

The most inexpensive option is to drive the item to the closest IKEA store for in-person return. IKEA has a short online form you can fill out before heading to the store, and you will receive an SMS barcode to expedite the return process at the store. You can fill out the online form at any time, and the barcode you receive is valid for two weeks.

Are There Things I Can’t Return?

Almost all of IKEA’s products can be returned, however, mattresses fall under IKEA’s “Love it or exchange it” program. If a mattress’ packaging has been removed and the mattress has been gently used, it is still returnable for up to one year after purchase (with proof of purchase). The mattress can not be damaged in any way and will be exchanged for a more comfortable fit.

Custom-made kitchen items (countertops, for example) can not be returned. Food and drink items are also excluded from the IKEA return policy.

As you can see, IKEA’s order cancellation and return policy is designed to be easy to use, and you can anticipate a smooth return transaction when you need it. With your purchase receipt and delivery and/or in-store transportation logistics arranged, you can expect to receive a quick refund on your purchase.
